As an official sponsor of the Dakar Rally, the British adventure brand Defender contributes in many ways to the world’s most demanding off-road race.
Over the course of the four-year collaboration, it is planned to provide the organizers with a fleet of six highly specialized Defender vehicles for terrain exploration. This operation has already begun: the first two are already working on connecting the final threads of the route for the 2026 Dakar Rally.
The unique challenge of the Dakar Rally, which attracts hundreds of participants each year, arises from the demanding routes set by race directors, covering several thousand kilometers over a period of 10 to 15 days. On the winding route through the remote desert of Saudi Arabia, Dakar officials need the performance and durability of the reconnaissance vehicles to be able to test and validate every kilometer of the stage before the route is closed.
The Defender reconnaissance vehicles are versions of the 110 models with a P300 engine and rally modifications to ensure they are perfectly equipped for weeks of desert route planning by officers who spend hours behind the wheel crossing dirt tracks, loose sand, dunes and rocky roads.
Undoubtedly, safety is paramount, which is why each Defender reconnaissance vehicle features a full roll cage and is configured to carry just three occupants to maximize equipment storage space. All three seats are equipped with four-point seat belts.
The P300 four-cylinder engine is usually included as standard, but not the Competition cooling kit and the high air intake with cyclone pre-filter to optimize air purity.
Other modifications include all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, rally shock absorbers, reinforced underbody protection and increased recovery points. To expand storage capacity, a 132kg roof rack complements the additional space offered by the three-seat configuration.
There is also no shortage of tools, spare parts and an emergency recovery kit with a sand tray as well as an additional fuel tank that gives you an additional range of up to 700 km.
Long exploration routes require many nights of camping in the desert, so the extensive equipment list is rounded out with a refrigerator, additional lighting and a 40 liter water tank for showering.
Once the route is determined (the details of which are only revealed to participants at the start of the day’s stage), reconnaissance vehicles will also be deployed to the Dakar Rally itself to “open” the stage.
In addition to supporting reconnaissance work with specific vehicles, Defender’s collaboration with the Dakar Rally also includes providing a fleet of Defender vehicles to support the event and transport race officials and VIP media during the competition. The collaboration began at the 2025 Dakar Rally and will continue until at least 2028.
