With an exclusive look at the refreshed 2027 Kia Telluride, Kia opened a new chapter in its iconic design history. Since its debut six years ago, the Telluride midsize SUV has become a runaway success for the brand, praised for its balance of refined luxury and ruggedness.
This deft combination helped Telluride redefine family adventure with inspiring style, luxurious comfort and an unparalleled driving experience.
The challenge for the second generation of Telluride was not to reinvent but to evolve. For Kia’s design team, the goal was clear: to preserve the essence and design DNA that made the original model a benchmark in its segment, while increasing its presence and sophistication. It wasn’t about starting from scratch. They were based on a legacy.
The result is an all-new Telluride that is larger, bolder and retains its distinctive boxy design. Now 2.3 inches longer overall, with a wheelbase nearly 3 inches longer and height 1 inch higher, it’s a confident evolution that stays true to its roots while adopting a more modern style.
Guided by Kia’s global design philosophy, Opposites United, the Telluride combines strength with elegance, robustness with sophistication and innovation with discretion. It shows that sequels can definitely outperform the original model.
The all-new 2027 Telluride will make its official world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month in a wide range of trim levels, including the X-Pro. The second-generation SUV is scheduled to arrive at dealers in the first quarter of 2026.
Unexpected combinations with the “Opposites United” philosophy
Since 2021, Kia’s “Opposites United” philosophy has been the guiding principle of the brand’s design language. On the Telluride, this approach is brought to life through the interplay of contrasts, where sharp angles meet soft curves and ruggedness fuses with refined sophistication.
“With the Telluride, it was a sober and discreet design; I would almost say anti-design,” said Tom Kearns, vice president and senior design manager of the Kia Design Center in America. “With this approach we wanted to capture strength and luxury, tradition and modernity in a single expression. “This is exactly what enabled us to achieve ‘Opposites United’.”
Exterior design: the dreamer’s companion
Inspired by the untamed beauty of the Colorado town for which it is named, Telluride’s sculptural exterior design captures the spirit of the Rocky Mountains, with every angle and surface designed to convey strength, security and confidence. The front sets a distinctive tone: bold, robust and ready for anything.
A wide hood with clean, straight lines gives it an imposing presence, while vertical headlights frame the high-gloss grille, giving the SUV a confident and sophisticated look. Precise grille patterns and advanced signature lights create a futuristic, high-tech impression that suits both city streets and a mountain retreat.
The flowing contours of the body give the side profile an elegant shape, while the pronounced triangular creases on the fenders are reminiscent of the chiseled facets of a diamond. The rising lines give the impression of lifting the vehicle and emphasize the proud and athletic presence of the SUV. Floating wheel covers add elegance and weather protection, while the sloping roofline contributes to dynamic fluidity without compromising interior space.
The sculpted indentations in the wheel arches break with convention and provide an intelligent and deliberate break – an attention-grabbing design detail that will become another Telluride hallmark. Flush door handles, such as those offered on the Kia EV6 and EV9 models, contribute to a clean, modern appearance.
At the rear, a rising shoulder line connects with the wide fender surfaces and gives the vehicle an imposing and robust appearance, while the sculpted bumper hints at the off-road character of the SUV.
Factor X
The Telluride X-Pro takes on a more imposing and sophisticated character. True to the design language of the Kia X series, this version features black wheel arches, side mirrors, beltline moldings and D-pillars. Raised roof racks add to the adventurous profile and provide space for the gear you need to explore uncharted territory.
At the front, a distinctive mesh grille is combined with a sleek black lower bumper, creating a look that evokes both tactical and aggressive style.
With all-terrain tires and 9.25 inches of ground clearance, the X-Pro goes beyond aesthetics and is ready to go where the asphalt ends. And for those moments when form meets function, the
The art of lighting
While sculpted lines and bold proportions lay the foundation for the new Telluride, its unique lighting brings it to life. “The original Telluride featured those distinctive vertical taillights. In the second generation, we enhanced that strong lighting signature by adding them to the front as well,” said Kurt Kahl, design manager at the Kia Design Center in the Americas.
The two vertical LED strips that frame the grille and define the front of the Telluride incorporate Kia’s “Star Map” lighting graphic. The amber daytime running lights (DRL) return with this more elegant and modern expression. Its precise geometry not only modernizes the SUV, but also gives it a lighthouse look reminiscent of signposts showing the way through changing terrain. At the rear, the headlights have an architectural character.
The body color separates the two light bars and emphasizes their graphic clarity. Overall, the headlights and taillights appear integrated and precise and are reminiscent of the high-tech lighting of a digital display. The light signature has evolved, but the essence remains. It remains geometric, vertical, clear and unmistakably Telluride.
Exclusive to the Telluride X-Pro, the new ambient lighting feature improves both form and function. Soft light is projected from the rearview mirrors, under the rear doors and from the rear bumper, illuminating the vehicle’s surroundings. Additional lighting on the raised tailgate makes tasks such as changing tires or accessing cargo easier in low light conditions. It is a design detail that goes beyond aesthetics to provide practical utility while emphasizing the SUV’s imposing silhouette.
When you open the front doors, the puddle lights illuminate the word “Telluride” on the floor. Wheels (available in 18, 20 and 21 inches) with contrasting surfaces and D-shaped patterns further define the Telluride’s bold identity, striking a balance between elegance and ruggedness. On the X-Series, the black wheels feature thicker spokes that convey confidence and performance.
Its interior – a technological refuge
In the new Telluride, design becomes an experience. Inspired by the vision of a limitless sanctuary where urban life meets nature, the cabin invites passengers into a space that feels both spacious and intimate.
A wide horizontal floor plan conveys a sense of grandeur, while a bold, enveloping design conveys a sense of retreat. Flowing surfaces evoke natural contours, while wood-like textures add warmth and an organic touch. Real metal accents emphasize precision and spaciousness, while sturdy grab handles convey an image of robustness.
Subtle lighting under the center console creates a soft glow that enhances the tranquility and enhances the luxurious feel of the interior. In the rear, the passenger console transforms into a functional table, while available mesh headrests in the first and second row combine modern style with everyday comfort.
Even functionality is redefined, with a reconfigurable cargo area that includes a folding luggage table with integrated ruler markings and a removable divider – a nod to outdoor adventure that combines form and function.
Thanks to its increased length and height, the 2027 Telluride offers a more spacious interior with better access to the second and third rows. Its larger dimensions also contribute to increased roof clearance (up to 1/2 inch more on sunroof models), improving comfort without compromising the Telluride’s imposing proportions.
The core concept of interior design in terms of colors, materials and finishes (CMF) is great. The cabin features a sumptuous yet understated elegance and is inspired by the world of luxury interiors with rich nuances and tactile details.
Color combinations such as Deep Navy Blue with Tuscan Umbra create a bold duality, while the new Blackberry – a rich shade of purple – combined with Sand Beige offers a striking harmony that is sophisticated, bold and unmistakably iconic.
In the X models, the interior color palette becomes more sober with black, dark khaki or leather brown tones that convey durability and sophistication. Texture plays a key role, with the seats featuring a variety of raised lines, diagonal motifs and V-shapes that add depth.
The same attention to color and finish extends to the Telluride’s exterior, where new paint options such as Jade Green Black and Terrain Brown (available in gloss and matte finishes) join an expanded palette of ten colors. Each shade reflects the Telluride’s confidence and versatility: bold enough for adventure and stylish enough to rock in the showroom.
