Everyone is talking about how to get visibility with AI, how to get cited in ChatGPT, and how to structure content for large language models. But there’s something missing from most of these conversations: How can we actually measure whether any of this is working?
You can spend months optimizing your website’s structure for machine readability and creating content specifically for AI use. But without the correct measurement, you are flying blind. The problem is that AEO measurement requires a fundamentally different approach than traditional SEO metrics.
Why AEO measurement is fundamentally different from SEO
There is an important statistic that illustrates how different AEO is from traditional SEO. According to Ahrefs research, on average only 12% of AI assistant citations also rank in Google’s top 10. This means that 88% of AI citations come from URLs that do not appear in Google’s top results for the same searches.

You could dominate the first page of Google for a keyword but be completely invisible in AI search results. Conversely, you may rank poorly on Google but be frequently cited by ChatGPT or Claude. Because of this lack of correlation, completely different measurement approaches are required.
The difference in search behavior
A SEMrush study found that the average Google query is only 4.2 words long, while the average ChatGPT prompt is 22 words. This is more than five times longer and has a huge impact on the measurement.
With Google’s short searches, you could track a handful of target keywords and get a good idea of your visibility. But with 22-word prompts, the likelihood of multiple users typing the exact same query is vanishingly small.
When people use Google, they think in terms of keywords, short, narrowed down searches. With AI search, users provide context, describe their situation, and have a conversation instead of conducting a search. This behavioral change requires an entirely new measurement framework.
The problem of data availability
Google provides search volume data through its API, which is why tools like SEMrush can show you exactly how many people are searching for specific terms. With AI search, this data is simply not available.
The most important differences:
Traditional SEO:
- Search volume data available via API
- One keyword = one SERP (deterministic)
- The rankings are stable and understandable
- Tools can measure the exact position
AEO:
- No public search volume data
- The same prompt can generate different answers (probabilistic)
- Quotes vary between users
- Success is measured directionally, not based on exact rankings
This variability makes measurement more complex than just checking your ranking for a keyword.
How to measure AEO with prompt tracking tools
Creating your prompt variations is only half the battle. You need a way to actually measure your visibility across different AI platforms.
There are several options on the market. At Blend, we partnered with Scrunch as part of our AEO services after evaluating several tools. It offers tracking across ten different major language models with excellent data visualization and flexibility to manage numerous prompts in different categories.
Understanding the measurement dashboard
Modern AEO measurement tools offer multiple levels of transparency. At the dashboard level, you get an overview of your overall performance – your competitive presence compared to rivals, which AI platforms cite you the most, the sentiment when your brand is mentioned, and whether you are usually mentioned at the top, middle, or bottom of replies.
The true value lies at the individual prompt level. For each prompt variation you follow, you can see a timeline showing whether you appeared in the response, whether you were quoted, and which specific pages on your site were referenced.
What the data actually shows you
Let’s take a concrete example: If you track a prompt like “B2B SaaS HubSpot website agency,” you’ll see a timeline showing when you appeared in the results and when you didn’t. You may see a pattern of being absent for several days and then suddenly reappearing after making technical changes to your website or publishing new content.
The visualization uses simple color coding. Green means you were present and quoted, red means you were not present. If you see more green than red after optimizations, that’s your signal that you’re moving in the right direction.
Understand the probabilistic nature of results
There’s something important to understand here: they won’t appear in every single answer to a given prompt. Even if you did everything right, you will still see some red circles mixed in with the green. This is completely normal for large language models.
What you are looking for are directional trends. Do you see more green over time? Does the ratio shift in your favor as you make improvements? Are you quoted from various of your pages?
Pay attention to which specific pages are cited. If content you’ve created for a specific category shows up in quotes, that’s evidence that your strategy is working.
The four-layer AEO measuring framework
While timely visibility tracking is critical, it’s not the only metric you should monitor. We recommend a four-layer measuring framework.
Level one: Instant visibility
This is your earliest signal of success. Are you becoming more visible in the prompt categories that matter to you? This should be your leading indicator, the first thing to move if your AEO strategy is working.
Layer two: AI referral traffic
After you establish visibility, you should expect increased referral traffic from AI platforms. Look for traffic from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini in your analytics.
Set the right expectations here. AI recommendation traffic probably won’t match organic search volume yet. Users may see your brand mentioned, get information from the AI summary, and then navigate to you through another channel.
Layer three: brand search and direct traffic increase
When someone discovers you through AI search, they often don’t click through straight away. Instead, they may search for your brand in Google or enter your URL directly.
Track if you notice an increase:
- Brand searches in Google Search Console
- Direct traffic in your analytics
- Traffic patterns that correlate with AEO efforts
This captures AI-driven discoveries that cannot be properly attributed through standard tracking.
Layer four: Self-reported naming and commercial signals
Add questions to your high-intent conversion forms and ask how potential customers discovered your business. Do people mention ChatGPT, AI Search, or similar terms?
Also track your commercial signals:
- Demo requests
- Consultation bookings
- Other high intent conversions
Even if you can’t make a direct connection between AI visibility and conversions through analytics, the correlation is important.
The importance of technical optimization
While we focused on measurement, AEO isn’t just about content. Technical optimization plays a critical role in whether AI systems can effectively crawl, understand, and cite your website.
Proper schema markup helps AI systems understand the structure and context of your content. A clear site architecture makes it easier for large language models to navigate and extract relevant information. Fast page speeds ensure AI crawlers can access your content efficiently, while machine-readable formatting allows AI systems to accurately analyze and process your information.
Many technical SEO best practices also help with AEO, but there are additional considerations specific to how large language models process information. The good news? When you make technical improvements, you can often see relatively quick improvements in your prompt visibility metrics within a week or two.
Advances in AEO measurement
AEO measurement represents a sea change from traditional SEO analysis. Success is not about finding the one perfect incentive to rank for. It’s about establishing category-level authority that makes you relevant to a wide range of related searches.
The four-layer measuring framework gives you the structure you need:
- Track instant visibility as your leading indicator
- Monitor AI referral traffic as validation
- Pay attention to branded search and direct traffic growth
- Capture self-reported attributions and commercial results
If you approach AEO measurement with these principles and use the right tools and frameworks, you will understand whether your optimization efforts are working. More importantly, you’ll be able to iterate and make improvements based on real data rather than assumptions.
